A gust of wind chills the room, and the sky goes dark. Raindrops rattle down from the sky, clear a moment ago. Thunder clatters in the distance and then, suddenly, the storm is upon us. Just as suddenly, it stops and the sky clears.

The dog upstairs howls. A loud thump comes from the ceiling, and a forlorn scratching sound. Here, downstairs, the closet door swings open.

If this were a horror movie, I would step over and close it again.

But I wasn’t born yesterday.
